Landscape Painting Retreat
August 26 -29
Experience Nature through Art with Jennifer Thomson

The landscape Retreat is about change; experiencing another way of working.  It isn’t a ‘how to” retreat.  It is a time to explore new color exercises, ideas and playfulness.  Sometimes one has to walk through ugliness to see anew.  Sometimes we have to stretch further in art to find a new approach to our way of working.

Mornings for example, explore a fall exercise:  Tint paper orange in areas creating a color mood.  Bring colors: reds, yellows, and blues to wakefulness in veil painting technique.  Balance colors compositionally.  Find an inward glow of light.  Use greys and black to enhance the glow.  White in gesture for trees …what next?

Afternoons, inspired by John Marin’s (1870-1953) & Emil Nolde’s(1867-1956) art, exercises of their techniques & composition will be practiced and applied to our own artwork.

Work space:  Sun Studio & outdoors into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to experience Nature through direct observation.

Daily class:  9 am to 4:30 pm
Tuition:  $275 includes 4 organic veggie lunches, snacks & supplies
Deposit:  $75 nonrefundable, to reserve a space
Camping:  5 minutes driving from Sun Studio

2nd Annual Visual Arts Intensive—
Painting and Drawing for Teachers,
Educators, and Parents
with Van James

Sunday, June 12 to Friday, June 17, 2016
Honolulu, Hawai’i

This six-day drawing and painting retreat for teachers, artists, therapists and parents will take place from Sunday morning, June 12 to Friday afternoon, June 17, 2015. The course will look at how children first learn to draw and paint and how to best promote these arts with techniques and lessons appropriate to the developmental stages of the child. A Waldorf approach, appropriate to any educational setting, will be utilized with special attention to Rudolf Steiner’s ideas and the latest research on child development in connection with the arts.

Due to the special nature of Hawai’i and its spirit of place, these intensive classes will be held mornings only so that participants can have their afternoons free. All artistic sessions will be held at the Honolulu Waldorf School, Makai Campus, 5257 Kalaniana’ole Highway, 96821, in an ocean-side art studio. The school is located on a bus route and a selection of restaurants is located directly across the street.

Darkness & Dawn

Peach blossom, Rosa, and Green give luminosity, as ethereal world presents itself to balance the earthiness of Blacks and Browns.  We will explore lightness and weight through color and the art of painting.  The moving colors awaken our own inner movement and we begin to perceive a motif that condenses from the flowing color.
Taking the theme of Persephone ( a Greek myth), we will aspire creativity to awaken the motif artistically.  Mornings are devoted to this ongoing exercise of watercolor veil painting.  Afternoons, a variety of artistic exercises devoted to compositional work inspired from Emily Carr and Lawren Harris’s art.  One outing will be sketching & painting in the National Forest.  We will practice techniques from the ‘Group of 7’ to apply in our own

Extended Deadline

Invitation to Anthroposophical Artists in North America
to submit work to an open exhibition to be held in Ottawa, Canada, on the theme of “Encountering Our Humanity,” in August 2016.

Digital (JPG only) images of paintings, sculpture, mixed media, multi-media and architectural work created in the last 15 years may be submitted by June 1, 2016 to the email addresses below. Final selection will be made by June 15, 2016 for works to be included in a virtual slide show that will run during the “Encountering Our Humanity” conference venue, La Cité Collégiale in Ottawa, Canada, August 7-14, 2016. From these works, a further, smaller selection of pieces will be made for actual exhibition in a gallery space (to be announced) for the same period of time. (It is hoped that this selection may provide the basis for possible future shows.)

Please email images (no larger than 2MB) to and to, together with name of artist, title of work, dimensions, and cost if for sale. In addition, include a one-to-three sentence statement concerning your art: “what you are striving to achieve in your art”, or “what are your artistic questions?” A $25 fee will be required of each artist selected for the final exhibition in order to cover costs for a catalog. Shipping of actual work to and from the venue and insurance is the responsibility of the artist. Hand deliveries are possible two days before the opening. Potential purchases will be handled directly by the artists, but a 20% commission will be asked for to defray exhibition costs. (The selection of work is final.)

Selection of artwork will be made by Sylvie Richard and Van James, professional artists and members of the Visual Art Section of North America. Selection will be based on a wide range of styles and mediums expressive of the quality of work being done in North America today. These works will be shown together with a pre-existing and somewhat abridged exhibit of anthroposophical architecture (panels with photographs and possible models) originally shown in Europe. North American architects are invited to contribute to the broadening of this part of the exhibit.

For the Selection Committee,

Sylvie Richard

Public Talk Tuesday, Jan. 19 in Eugene, Oregon

This public talk is the culmination of a five week painting course we have been
doing here is Eugene, Oregon. It has centered around researching the musical in
the art of color and painting. We have also attempted to place the question into
the context of what Rudolf Steiner called true and false paths of spiritual development.
